What Is the Darkest Legal Window Tint in Florida?
What is the darkest legal window tint in Florida?
In Florida, the darkest legal tint on the front side windows is 28% VLT (it must let in at least 28% of light). Rear side and back windows can go down to 15% on cars and 6% on SUVs, vans and trucks. The windshield can only have non-reflective tint above the AS-1 line.
Florida window tint limits by window
| Window | Cars (sedans, coupes) | SUVs, vans and trucks |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield | Non-reflective tint above the AS-1 line only | Non-reflective tint above the AS-1 line only |
| Front side windows | 28% or lighter | 28% or lighter |
| Rear side windows | 15% or lighter | 6% or lighter |
| Back window | 15% or lighter | 6% or lighter |
| Reflectivity | Front sides max 25%, rear max 35% | Front sides max 25%, rear max 35% |
VLT means visible light transmission. The lower the number, the darker the tint. A "5% limo tint" lets in only 5% of light.
Is 5% tint legal in Florida?
No, not on a regular car. On a sedan, 5% is too dark for every window. On an SUV, van or truck, 5% is still darker than the 6% limit for the rear windows, so most installers use 6% or the next legal shade instead. 5% is never legal on the front side windows of any vehicle.
Is 20% tint legal in Florida?
On the rear side windows and back window, yes: 20% is lighter than the 15% and 6% limits. On the front side windows, no. The front doors must be 28% or lighter, so 20% there can get you a ticket.
What tint should I get for my front windows?
Most Miami drivers choose a front shade that meets the 28% limit and a darker shade in the back for privacy. If you want more heat rejection without going darker, choose a ceramic film. A good ceramic film blocks a lot of infrared heat even in a light shade, so you stay cool and legal. See our 3M ceramic window tint options.
Can I get a medical exemption for darker tint?
Yes. Florida allows a medical exemption for people with conditions that require extra protection from the sun. You apply through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles with a form signed by your doctor, and you keep the exemption in the vehicle.
What happens if my tint is too dark?
Illegal tint is a noncriminal, nonmoving traffic infraction in Florida, so you can get a ticket. Tint that is too dark can also be a problem when you sell the car. If you are not sure what is on your windows, we can check it before we install anything new.
